STEM Unfiltered: Student-Led Hands-On STEM Experience at Tufts | May 15

Young girl gives speech about science at STEM conference

STEM Unfiltered isn’t just about introducing students to science, technology, engineering, and math; it’s about students leading the way.

This hands-on event, happening on May 15th at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, was created in collaboration with faculty at Cummings School of Veterinary medicine at Tufts and organized by student leaders from the middle school cohort of the Blackstone Valley Youth Leadership Academy (BVYLA) — an early leadership program under BVEF’s youth development model.

These student leaders took the reins on shaping everything from the event theme and outreach to the activities and messaging. Working closely with STEM professionals, they’ve built an experience that gives their peers, 7th and 8th graders across the Blackstone Valley, a chance to explore real-world STEM pathways in a way that’s hands-on, inclusive, and inspiring.

Through interactive labs, behind-the-scenes campus tours, and career spotlights, students will engage with topics like veterinary science, biology, and medical innovation, all curated through a peer leadership lens.

This is what career-connected learning looks like in action: led by students, for students.

Whether a middle schooler is already interested in STEM or just beginning to explore their interests, STEM Unfiltered offers an entry point that feels relevant and empowering. And for the student leaders behind the scenes, it’s an opportunity to flex real-world planning, collaboration, and communication skills.
