In an effort to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world career opportunities, educators across the Blackstone Valley were invited to participate in a complimentary professional development session focused on Work-Based Learning (WBL) and Career-Connected Learning (CCL). This engaging 90-minute session aimed to equip teachers with the tools and understanding necessary to effectively integrate these learning models into K-12 education.
The session, led by Erin Conley, Executive Director of the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, and Tara Bennett, Career, Community, & Innovations Coordinator at Nipmuc Regional High School, provided a comprehensive exploration of WBL and CCL. The presenters highlighted the significance of these approaches in contextualizing education, ensuring that students can directly relate their academic experiences to potential career paths.
Participants engaged in dynamic discussions and explored practical strategies for incorporating career-connected learning into their teaching practices. They delved into how WBL and CCL can enhance educational equity, offering all students—regardless of background— the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in an ever-evolving workforce.
The session objectives focused on building a common understanding of work-based and career-connected learning, enhancing educators' ability to link classroom content to career opportunities, and identifying the pivotal role these models play in advancing equity in
education. By the end of the session, educators left with a renewed perspective on how to transform their teaching methods to better prepare students for future success. This professional development opportunity not only empowered teachers but also laid the
foundation for innovative educational practices that promise to open doors to brighter futures for all students.
