Women in STEM
Leadership Academy

2021-2022 Program & Application Materials

In partnership with WPI, the BVEF Women in STEM Leadership Academy offers five engaging sessions that explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while developing leadership skills of 30 female and non-binary students who are in 7th & 8th grade across Blackstone Valley.  This in-person, STEM curriculum will be delivered at the WPI campus by trained WPI undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty who will provide hands-on, project-based education.  At the conclusion of the program, all students will be provided resources and tools to continue their journey in leadership and STEM.

While BVEF is committed to providing this learning opportunity to students, our first priority is health and safety. Strong communication with participating students and families will guide any necessary adaptations over the course of the 2021-2022 Academy.

Participation offers students opportunities to:

  • Participate in hands-on project based work to better understand the engineering design process

  • Step outside comfort zone & meet students from other middle schools

  • Experience first hand the uses for STEM in everyday life, and career applications

  • Identify, develop and practice personal leadership skills and styles

  • Practice leadership skills integrated into each STEM workshop

  • Build time management skills

  • Practice public speaking & communication skills

  • Explore career opportunities & practice employability skills

  • Build interpersonal skills that are a key factor to success including teamwork and problem-solving.
