Updated: Nov 29, 2021

Tim Walsh, a science teacher at Milford High School, engaged in a Teacher Externship experience during the summer of 2021 with Waters Corporation, an analytical laboratory instrument manufacturer in Milford, Massachusetts.

The Perkins Teacher Externship Program is sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and carried out by BVEF and MassHire Central Region Workforce Board. It is one of many funded professional development opportunities offered to local teachers.

BVEF recognizes the importance of providing educators with the relationships and learning needed to keep their classrooms connected to today's workforce needs.

Burt J. Bliss, Sr. Director of Manufacturing Operations at Waters Corporation, shared the following about his perspective on Mr. Walsh's BVEF Teacher Externship Experience:

"Tim embraced this experience and approached it with curiosity and a desire to learn. Tim gained insights into Waters’ science and technology and the benefit it delivers to our customers. Tim spent time discussing processes with our Instrument Research, Scientific Operations, and Chemistry Operations teams.
He travelled to our new chemical synthesis plant in Taunton, Massachusetts for a tour. Tim also had a deep dive into our Milford Operations to learn about processes, technologies and capabilities. Lastly, Tim was exposed to the various disciplines and functions required to support a Manufacturing Operations as well as the soft skills (EQ) required to be successful at Waters. It was a pleasure to have Tim on-site."

BVEF is committed to continuing the Teacher Externship program and increasing other forms of Professional Development. By serving teachers directly, we are able to increase our impact exponentially on students.

The 2020 Recipient, Mr. Gorman, shared the beneficial effects of the experience on his classroom:

"I incorporate many of the stories and insights I learned at Waters into my classes. It was a great experience and I feel like I am a better teacher because of it."
